Museum of land speed: a family-friendly venue with lots of hands-on, interactive displays, as well as audio-visual experiences that give you the sensation of racing along Pendine Sands. Permanent exhibitions interpret the history of land speed record attempts at Pendine and more general racing events on the sands. These include more recent records set, such as those by Zef Eisenberg and Idris Elba, as well as group events like the Vintage Hot Rod Association visits.
We also host travelling exhibitions that are loaned in from other institutions. The best-known travelling exhibition that occasionally visits the museum is the legendary race car ‘Babs’. Babs broke the world land speed record on Pendine Sands in 1926 while being driven by Welshman J.G. Parry Thomas. Sadly, the car overturned the following year on the sands when Parry Thomas attempted to regain the world record, which resulted in his tragic death. The car was then buried in the dunes as a mark of respect. It was dug up and restored over 40 years later and now attracts fans from around the world to see it when it’s at the museum or at race events like Goodwood.
Pendine Sands offers a wealth of activities for visitors. Its stunning 7-mile stretch of sandy beach is not only perfect for leisurely walks, but also allows you to drive on the sand, making it a historic hub for world speed record attempts.
The area also features a traffic-free 500m promenade with panoramic views of the beach, providing easy access to the shoreline. Visitors can enjoy kayaking, grab a coffee or ice cream, or dine at the popular Asian Fusion restaurant on the first floor. For families, there’s an outdoor adventure play area to keep the kids entertained.
